A Microsoft Enterprise Sharepoint Server farm, in which the Microsoft Project Server solution is installed, provides a wide array of business intelligence tools to help organizations gain insights into their Projects, Programs and Portfolios. In deploying Enterprise Project and Portfolio solutions, we think of business intelligence in three specific categories. First, you have business intelligence components that give you insight into how well your business processes are performing. We often refer to these tools as "Data and Process Health Check" tools. These types of tools empower the organization to improve its performance by helping to create a transparent environment, while at the same time providing the various stakeholders with the tools they need to succeed. Only after this first set of tools are deployed and become "THE" tools which are regularly relied upon for managing the Project and Portfolio processes, can you begin focussing on any business intelligence components which would give insight into the actual project and portfolio performance. Simply put, it is because an organization is using the first set of tools, that they have confidence in their data and can rely upon it to make decisions based on Project and Portfolio performance. The third category of Business Intelligence tools are those which give insight into trend information. Although these tools are powerful, they require thoughtful planning and design to ensure that the right metrics are being captured over time.
